A same-sex couple from Ann Arbor, Michigan, in an effort to adopt three special needs children that they have been raising as foster parents, files a lawsuit against the adoption laws of Michigan. The case becomes a suit about the rights of same-sex couples to marry. After winning their case in Michigan, it is overturned on appeal but is then taken up at the United States Supreme Court where, in a close 5-4 decision, opens up the rights for same-sex couples across the entire country.
